The
Building Crew consists of a Building Manager, 2 Tradesmen (one of
whom is an Indigenous person and did his 4 year apprenticeship through
CBE), and 4 labourers. It is hoped to start two more local apprenticeships
this year.
Over the last 5 years the Building Team's achievements
include refurbishing 22 houses at an average cost of $70,000, Bushlight
solar electricity works, maintenance of Queensland Govt. (Q-Build)
and CRAC houses, and various projects on 8 of the 11 homelands (Outstations).
The
Building Crew has just finished a new 4- bedroom home in Coen as sub-contractor
to Q-Build and ATSIH (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing).
It is also constructing the Rural Transaction Centre (RTC, cost $280,000),
which will combine a group of services for the betterment of the community,
such as Centrelink, the Dept. of Families, a bank, and the Community
Justice Group. Due
for completion March 2006.
